A pivotal year on the South Shore

A pivotal year on the South Shore

Project progress
Published on

The work begun in the middle of Highway 10 and the pillars of the elevated structure provide a glimpse of the REM skeleton on the South Shore. Here’s what’s coming up in the first half of 2019.

The work is kicking into high gear this year! The issue: a portion of the segment on the South Shore will be used as a test track for the REM’s light rail beginning in 2020. The construction of the tracks will have to be finished prior to this in order to go ahead with commissioning tests.

Rive-Sud terminal station

Station Rive-Sud REM

The elevated structure leading to the Rive-Sud terminal station (15 pillars) is already well underway. At this time, the missing columns and pierheads are being concreted in order to complete the pillar structure.

The next step will be the installation of the precast concrete lateral beams in the spring. The deck slabs will then be placed on the beams. Afterwards, the tracks and power supply catenary will be installed later in 2019.

The construction of the station will begin in a few weeks, as will the maintenance centre right beside it. The earthwork, in particular the extension and widening of Rome Boulevard, will continue in parallel to prepare the site and build the access lanes.

The Rive-Sud terminal station will be composed of a bus terminal (22 platforms), a park-and-ride lot (3,000 spaces) and a maintenance centre.

Du Quartier station

Station Du Quartier REM

Begun last year, the earthwork and drainage in the middle of Highway 10 are continuing in 2019. The building of the track foundations will begin in the spring and continue throughout the year.

The Du Quartier station will be located in the middle of Highway 10, next to the new Du Quartier overpass (between Quartier Dix30 and the future Solar Uniquartier). The foundation piles are already ready, and the work of building the station and pedestrian walkways is in progress, until fall 2020.

In the spring, Leduc Boulevard will be realigned, in order to prepare the land for drilling the caisson and building the column. We will then build the pierhead (requiring a modification of the Malo and Leduc overpasses), then install the beams and deck slabs in the second half of the year.

The REM will link Quartier Dix30 to McGill in 15 minutes and Édouard-Montpetit in 18 minutes.

Panama station

Station Panama REM

Work is underway at the Panama terminal with the construction of a temporary parking lot and terminal. This new infrastructure will maintain user access to buses while the REM is being built. New road connections will also be built during this period to ensure access to the future terminal.

The transitional terminal is scheduled to open in mid-2019. This step will enable the teams to begin building Panama station, located in the middle of Highway 10.
