A detailed noise assessment to identify required mitigation measures

The REM is an automated light rail system, which is a quieter technology than the heavy exo trains that used to run on the Deux-Montagnes line. Nevertheless, sound modelling of the REM while in operation was carried out to assess its noise impact in the areas it runs through.

To accomplish this, noise measurements were taken in the field to document noise levels prior to the REM. Then, sound modelling that included the REM was carried out. This was done by removing the noise of exo trains and adding the noise of the REM, while taking into account the timetable, train frequency, speed, structure elevation, curves, etc.

Consideration was also given to factors specific to each area, such as traffic, land topography, soil type and proximity to residential areas.

Monitoring during operating phase

During the operating phase, a monitoring program will be implemented to ensure that noise levels are consistent with the detailed modelling. If actions indicate increases above expected levels, corrective measures will be implemented.

The situation in your area

The sound modelling identified four specific areas where noise barriers need to be installed prior to commissioning the REM, enabling it to meet the requirements of the environmental decree issued by the Québec government.

How do noise barriers reduce noise?

The basic principle is to reduce noise diffusion at the source, by positioning noise barriers near the tracks. This reduces its height, while limiting the transmission of noise. The noise barriers will be placed on foundations on which prefabricated panels will be installed. These panels are made of acoustic insulation that absorbs sound and prevents it from bouncing.

Impacts and mitigation measures:

The goal of the REM project office and the NouvLR consortium is to mitigate the impact on local residents and ensure everyone’s safety by taking all appropriate measures.

  • If necessary, depending on the temperature, heaters may be used day and night to properly dry the concrete foundation.
  • Residents' fences will remain in place.
