Work blitz - Construction of a temporary shared platform

Nature of the work

A new temporary shared platform will be built between Canora and Mont-Royal stations during the long weekend of May 18 to 20. As of May 21,2019, exo trains will travel on a single track on the west side so that construction of the REM’s future Canora and Mont-Royal stations can begin on the east side of the tracks. The west side platforms were torn down earlier this year to begin building the REM’s future stations on that side.

The preliminary work, which began two weeks ago, will continue for a few more weeks. Some work will take place directly south of the pedestrian crossing connecting Graham Boulevard to Wicksteed Avenue. As a safety measure for pedestrians, the passage will be closed on an occasional basis during the work. Pedestrians will be invited to circulate by Merit Crescent. The pedestrian crossing will be vacated when there is no work and access to the Wicksteed Memorial Park will always be maintained.

* Work is scheduled to take place from May 18 to May 20. Work will begin at 7 a.m. on May 18 and will continue until May 20 in the evening. Evening work might be required to ensure that trains will be able to run on Tuesday, May 21. Work before and after this time period could be necessary to mobilize and demobilize all elements required to carry out the work and to clean up the site. The work on the tracks may continue until the morning of May 21 so as to test the equipment that was installed.

The following schedule for the work planned from May 18 to May 20 may vary according to weather conditions and work progress. The work will be carried out at the bottom of the slope, on the west side of the tracks.  It will include the following steps:

• Excavation of the bottom of the slope
• Installation of concrete blocks
• Backfilling of platform
• Levelling of platform surface and paving

Impacts and mitigation measures

The goal of the REM project office and the NouvLR consortium is to mitigate the impact on surrounding residents and ensure everyone’s safety by taking all appropriate measures.

• One lane of Canora Road will be closed between Dobie and Palmerston avenues during the weekend. Signage will be installed and to redirect traffic.
• This work will generate noise and dust. Mitigation measures will be implemented as needed to mitigate impacts at the source (acoustic enclosures, low-noise equipment and white noise vehicles) where possible. To ensure that the project’s noise and air quality criteria are met, monitoring by environmental experts will take place throughout the work.
• Some of the work will require truck traffic in the neighbourhood; long-term traffic pattern changes are also in place to minimize construction traffic and secure the construction zones. Signallers located around the perimeter of the construction site will ensure pedestrian safety.

Access to new shared platform

The new platform, halfway between the existing platforms, will maintain access to trains from the Deux-Montagnes and Mascouche lines until their closure, slated for early 2020.

The new platform will be accessible from Canora Road on the east side of the tracks, via two new accesses. An access will be located on the path between Laird Boulevard and Wicksteed Avenue, at the eastern end of the Parc Commémoratif Wicksteed, while another access will be on Canora Road, west of Palmerston Avenue.

Users on the west side of the track will be able to use the walkway at the end of Montgomery Avenue or the Laird Boulevard overpass.
