The REM and the Île-des-Sœurs station in brief

The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is the largest public transit project launched in Québec in the last 50 years. This fully automated electric light rail system will include 26 stations and 67 km of tracks across Greater Montréal.

A REM station will be built on Île-des-Sœurs, extending the public transit network with reliable, high-frequency service 20 hours per day, 7 days per week. The future station will be connected to three metro lines, thereby providing more travel options to the airport, the South Shore, the North Shore and the West Island.

Nature of work

To connect the REM’s Île-des-Sœurs Station to downtown Montréal, the REM will run over the Île-des-Sœurs Channel. Therefore, an elevated structure will need to be built near the bypass bridge that is no longer in service. The work will be carried out in phases and extend to the commissioning of the REM in 2021.

This first work phase will include building four pillars in the Île-des-Sœurs Channel, according to the preliminary schedule below. To construct these pillars, two temporary jetties will be built in the Channel, between the north and south banks. These jetties will accommodate the equipment required for the work and will be dismantled afterwards.

Schedule

Steps

July 2019 to winter/spring 2020

  • Installation of the south jetty

  • Construction of the first two pillars

Winter/spring 2020 to fall 2020

  • Removal of the south jetty and installation of the north jetty
  • Construction of the last two pillars

Work to complete the elevated structure will then be continued. Further communications will follow to present the next steps. The work site area is shown below. Note that the mobilization site will be located near the north jetty.

Impacts and mitigation measures

  • This work will generate noise. Environmental experts will monitor noise to ensure that project criteria are met. Mitigation measures will be put in place to reduce the impact of this noise as needed.
  • No road obstructions are expected. There will be a one-time obstruction of the Golf Road bike path near Highway 15. A flagger will be present to facilitate bicycle traffic.

* Work before and after this time period, on evenings and at night, or on weekends may be necessary. Due to the nature of the activities being performed, work cannot be interrupted while it is in progress, and must be completed to ensure integrity of the existing infrastructure is maintained.
