Installation of permanent noise barriers - Smith street sector

Installation of permanent noise barriers - Smith street sector

Road
Starting the week of May 31, for about 5 weeks During the day
Downtown

Nature of the work:

In anticipation of the commissioning of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), noise barriers will be installed along the route.

The location of these noise barriers was determined by sound modelling, in accordance with the regulatory framework established by the Government of Québec. The purpose of the modelling was to assess the current noise climate (without the REM) and to model the noise climate with the addition of the project in the operation phase, to determine if there is a significant difference between the two.

Once the REM is in operation, a monitoring program will be implemented to ensure that the noise levels are consistent with the modelling. If necessary, corrective measures will be implemented.

The planned location of noise barriers in your area is shown below.

Impacts and mitigation measures

  • The work may generate noise.

  • Obstruction of portions of Smith Street will be required.

Permanent noise barriers

The noise barriers are composed of white, 100% PVC prefabricated panels, installed on galvanized steel posts. Inside, they contain acoustic insulation that absorbs sound and prevents it from bouncing.

Noise barriers will be located near the tracks to reduce noise diffusion at the source. This makes it possible to reduce the barriers’ height, while limiting the transmission of noise.
