On September 26 and October 2, we unveiled two permanent works of art as part of the REM’s art program: Un voyage sans fin au-delà du présent, by Chih-Chien Wang, at Panama station, and Les Passagers, by David Armstrong VI, at Brossard station.

Panama station

Un voyage sans fin au-delà du présent is a photographic installation in one of the interior corridors of Panama station. It consists of eight photographs on glass panels placed on a lightbox in a metal structure.

Chih-Chien Wang is very familiar with the neighbourhood around Panama station. He visits it regularly and views it as a journey through the various dialects, cultures and culinary specialties. It is like a physical and metaphorical portal allowing him to navigate time and the seasons.

Brossard station

For Brossard station, David Armstrong VI has created a set of two sculptures entitled Les passagers, reflecting the very essence of travelling by public transit. This diptych combines aggregates of cast bronze, rippling ribbons and alternating vibrant colours.

In the artist’s vision, these two figures featuring plant-like, animal-like and human traits, with their suitcase and backpack, belong to both the past and the future. David Armstrong VI has sculpted the rippling forms as if they were alive. The forms are like two fearless travellers from a different era, swept along by a force in perpetual motion.

UNIR art program

Both works of art come under the Politique d'intégration des arts à l'architecture by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the UniR program, the REM’s public art program. All together, some $8 million will be invested in a total of 12 permanent works of art at various locations throughout the REM network.

Pieces will also be installed at Deux-Montagnes, Anse-à-L’Orme, Sainte-Dorothée, Bois Franc and Édouard-Montpetit stations and at Central Station. A final selection competition will be launched in the coming months to identify the artist who will be responsible for the public artwork planned for Pierrefonds-Roxboro station.
