Three things to know about the REM and related works in Laval

Project progress
Published on

The first phase of work to facilitate the arrival of the REM on the North Shore was recently launched. Here are three things to know about ongoing and upcoming REM works in Laval.

1- New railway bridges under construction

This fall, works were carried out across Îles Laval to upgrade two railway bridges in order to accommodate the REM.

First, a new railway bridge linking Montréal and Îles Laval over the Rivière des Prairies is being constructed using the launched bridge method.

Further north, the existing railway bridge that spans Rivière des Prairies and links Îles Laval and Sainte-Dorothée will be doubled to facilitate the passage of the REM. The installation of pillars and pierheads will continue in 2020 and the next stage will involve the installation of beams and concreting of the structure's edges, which will complete the northern portion of this bridge.

2- Extension works on Chemin-de-Fer Street, Sainte-Dorothée

Due to the increased frequency of the REM and in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists, all existing level crossings must be modified.

Site plan of the Sainte-Dorothée station

Des Bois Avenue will be lowered in order to pass under the REM railway tracks. This new configuration will no longer allow for a traffic intersection at the corner of Chemin-de-Fer Street and Des Bois Avenue. This is why Chemin-de-Fer Street will be extended along the existing park-and-ride lot and connect farther north on Avenue Des Bois.
These works will also involve redeveloping the Terrace de Fontenelle as of 2021. This terrace will be reconfigured into a roundabout and a multifunctional path will link the neighbourhood to Sainte-Dorothée station.

3- 2021: start of the construction of two stations in Laval

The construction of two stations in Laval, Sainte-Dorothée and Île-Bigras, will begin in 2021.

Preparatory works have already begun on the North Shore and construction work will continue in the coming years.
