Exceptional weather conditions : REM adjusts its operations and schedule

REM in service
Published on

Pulsar, the REM’s operator, is mobilizing in anticipation of a forecasted freezing‑rain event. Several preventive measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and reliability of the service.

Last departures at 11:00 p.m. from Gare Centrale station

As part of planned interventions, REM service will end earlier than usual to allow for the application of a biodegradable de‑icing product. The last departures from Gare Centrale station in each direction are scheduled for 11:00 p.m..

This deployment time takes into account both the end of the Canadiens game at the Bell Centre and the expected arrival of freezing‑rain precipitation later in the night.

The Backup plan will therefore be implemented starting at 11:00 p.m. to ensure service continuity.

REM running overnight

Empty REM will circulate throughout the night from Tuesday to Wednesday to prevent ice buildup on the catenary, the network’s overhead electrical line.

Adjusted frequency

Train frequency will be modified, with a five‑minute interval across the entire network throughout Wednesday, March 11. This measure aims to reduce excessive ice accumulation on the catenary and ensure reliable service.

Enhanced techniques to counter freezing rain

Since the start of winter, REM operator has developed innovative strategies to face ice formation on the catenary:

  • Preventive application of a biodegradable anti‑icing product
  • Ability to adjust electrical management to increase wire temperature and reduce ice formation
  • Improved train-mounted scrapers to optimize equipment de‑icing

These measures aim to reduce the possible impacts of the ice storm.
